NBA veteran to assist head coach Sam Vincent
Revelers Add Demps to Coaching Staff
MOBILE, Ala., Sept. 18, 2001 -- The National Basketball Development League (NBDL) and the Mobile Revelers have named Dell Demps the team's assistant coach, it was announced today by Karl Hicks, Senior Director of Basketball Operations for the NBDL and Sam Vincent, head coach of the Revelers.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me to continue my coaching career," said Demps. "Not only will I have the opportunity to further develop my coaching skills, but I get to do that as a part of the NBA family."
"Dell's unmatched work ethic as both a player and coach, coupled with his keen sense of the game will make him a valuable member of the Revelers organization," said Hicks.
Demps, 31, whose professional playing career included stints with three NBA teams, has seven years of coaching experience. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic's Summer League team that competed in Los Angeles this past July. He has also worked with college-bound athletes at the "To The Hoop Basketball Academy" in Sacramento, where the area's top high school players can expand their knowledge of the game before entering the collegiate ranks. He also coached at City Folsom Basketball Camp in Folsom, Calif., and Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove, Calif.
"Dell's basketball experience in the NBA, minor leagues and internationally can only help us develop players and push them to the next level," said Vincent. "He has proven he can teach fundamentals and strategy, and help players improve their individual skills."
Demps holds a Bachelors of Science degree and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of the Pacific. During his collegiate playing career, Demps increased his scoring and rebounding averages each season. He finished his career averaging 15.1 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game while maintaining a 3.4 grade point average. During his senior year, Demps averaged 19.0 ppg and 5.8 rpg, en route to earning Big West Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year honors, and was an Academic All-American Finalist.
Following his college career, Demps played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for four seasons with Yakima, Oklahoma City and Rochester averaging 8.7 ppg and was a member of the 1995 CBA Champion Sun Kings. Demps also played three seasons in the NBA with Golden State (1993-94), San Antonio (1995-96) and Orlando (1996-97). In his final CBA season (1996-97), Demps averaged 21.1 ppg for Yakima before being signed by the Magic. Demps also played professional basketball in Greece, France and Croatia.
