North Charleston Lowgators @ Greenville Groove, Nov. 16, 4 PM (ET), ESPN2
ESPN2 Game Notes: Inaugural NBDL Season Tips Off

While attending NBDL Central Training Camp at the end of October, Neil Edwards took issue with a media publication that had him listed at 7-1, instead of his proper height of 6-11.

“They should change that,” said Edwards, who was in Veteran Camp with the Los Angeles Clippers before arriving on the NBDL circuit. “If I were really that tall, I wouldn’t be here right now.”

Edwards appears to have a bright future ahead of him playing professional basketball and the journey continues tomorrow when his team, the North Charleston Lowgators takes on the Greenville Groove in the opening game of the 2001-02 inaugural NBDL season. The game, which will take place in Greenville, will air live on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. EST.

Edwards, who was the sixth overall pick in the NBDL Draft after an impressive showing in training camp, will likely start in the middle for head coach Alex English. Though still somewhat raw offensively, Edwards is a legitimate shot-blocking presence in the middle. North Charleston’s roster features several players who were in NBA camps this year – Chris Robinson (Dallas Mavericks), Makhtar Ndiaye (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Galen Young (Indiana Pacers).

Greenville also boasts a roster with NBA flavor. Eric Chenowith, who played four years at Kansas, was drafted in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. He wasn’t invited to training camp. DeeAndre Hulett, who could have the highest vertical jump in the entire league, was drafted by the Toronto Raptors in the second round (46th overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft. Greenville coach Milton Barnes selected Rahim Lockhart, a 6-8, 280-pound wide-body from the University of Mississippi, with his first round selection in the NBDL Draft.

The game will also mark the debut of Greenville assistant coach Stephanie Ready, who becomes the first woman to coach in men’s professional sports. Also of note – North Charleston teammates Antonio Grant and B.J. McKie played together at South Carolina. For Greenville, Tony Christie and Tom Wideman were teammates at Clemson.
