RED CLAWS TO HOLD OPEN SCRIMMAGES TO BENEFIT
PORTLAND, LEWISTON AND EDWARD LITTLE HIGH SCHOOLS
Red-White Games to Benefit PHS Play It Smart Program, LHS & ELHS Athletic Funds
Proceeds from the game will fund Portland High School’s Play It Smart program
for the 2009-10 school year. Play It Smart is a national organization committed
to improving the academic performance of high school student-athletes from
economically disadvantaged areas. Once a school joins the Play It Smart
organization an Academic Coach is appointed to monitor and encourage the
student-athletes for the entire year.
Tickets for the November 22 scrimmage are $5, and are available at Portland High
School, by calling the Portland High Athletic Department at 207-874-8257, and
online at the ticket return website. The Lady Red Claws dance team will perform
at half-time.
“The student-athletes at Portland High School who participate in the Play It
Smart have given back to the city of Portland in so many ways,” said Jennings.
“When we learned that the school did not have funding for the program, we wanted
to find a way to help out. A basketball game seemed the perfect solution. The
Play It Smart kids helped make our announcement of the team back in February a
wonderful, raucous event. We are happy to reciprocate with this fund-raiser to
help the program continue.”

programs. General admission tickets for the November 19 scrimmage are
$5 and are available at Lewiston High School’s Athletic Office or Edward Little

Gipper’s Sports Grill on Center Street in Auburn. Proceeds from the intra-squad
game, which will also feature a half-time performance by the Lady Red Claws

“This will be the first
opportunity for basketball fans in Maine to see the Red Claws in game action,”
said Jennings, “and we are thrilled that the public high schools in Lewiston and
