HERNANDO PLANELLS NAMED RED CLAWS ASSISTANT COACH
10-Year Coaching Pro Brings Unique Background to the Red Claws
PORTLAND, ME (October 8, 2010) – The Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, today announced that Hernando Planells been named the team’s assistant coach under Head Coach Austin Ainge. Planells replaces Randy Livingston, who left the team following its successful inaugural season to become the head coach of the Idaho Stampede.
“I’m excited to have Hernando on staff,” said Red Claws Head Coach Austin Ainge. “He has great character and work ethic, and he will be a tremendous help as we get ready for our second season.”
Hernando Planells is in his tenth season as a coach, with experience at the high school, college and professional ranks. He has also choreographed sports action in movies, commercials and print ads. Among his experience, he has coached the Ryukyu Golden Kings (Basketball Japan) and was the head coach of the Hollywood Fame (ABA), where he began as the assistant coach and Director of Player personnel to former NBA head coach Don Casey. For the past three seasons, Planells has served as a scout for Marty Blake, the Director of Scouting for the NBA. In his role as a scout, he put together scouting reports evaluating NBA prospects which were circulated to every NBA GM and player personnel director. Prior to scouting, Hernando founded ELITE athlete training which specialized in personal training and consulting services for athletes. Through his work with ELITE, Hernando trained and assisted over a hundred athletes reach their goal of gaining a college scholarship or playing professionally.
In 2005, Planells was named the first Vice President of Basketball Operations/Head Coach in Wyoming Golden Eagles (AAPBL) history. His experience includes stints as a college assistant coach at Citrus College, one of the top Community Colleges in the State of California, and was on staff at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and as a high school coach at Los Angeles High School, Immaculate Heart High School (AZ) and Monrovia High School.
Hernando’s experience and background has also allowed him to serve as a sports choreographer on movies and television for Mark Ellis and The Sports Studio as well as on his own. Some of his work includes the basketball scenes and the training of the actors on movies such as “Coach Carter” starring Samuel L. Jackson, “The Longest Yard” starring Adam Sandler, “Rebound” starring Martin Lawrence and Spider-Man 3 starring Tobey McGuire and others. His experience has also led him to work on commercials and print for the WNBA, Target and Nissay Insurance (featuring Japanese Basketball superstar Yuta Tabuse). His production work has also led him to train the athletes of “Extreme Dodgeball”, the highest rated show on the Game Show Network. Planells also appeared on SPIKE TV’s “SLAMBALL” as the head coach of the Bouncers for three years.
