DeSHAWN SIMS NAMED
2011 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
League’s 4th Leading
Scorer, 2011 All-Star Takes Home Top Rookie Honors
PORTLAND, ME
- The Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, today announced that rookie
forward DeShawn Sims has been named the 2011 NBA Development League Rookie of
the Year. It was the latest honor for the 23-year-old Sims, who was also selected to the 2011 NBA Development League All-Star Team and was named to the NBA Development League All-Rookie First Team and the All-NBA Development League Third Team.
“I am
enormously proud of DeShawn Sims for being named Rookie of the Year, but not the
least bit surprised,” said Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings.
“From the moment he stepped on the court for us, he has been a leader and brings
an incredible determination and competitiveness to the floor every single
night.”
“The
obstacles DeShawn has been forced to overcome in his life have been
well-documented, and they are things that would cause a lesser man to choose
another path,” Jennings continued. “That determination earned him his way to the
NBA D-League All-Star Game as a rookie, it brought him the Rookie of the Year
trophy – there is no question in my mind, his next step is the NBA.”
JAMAR SMITH RECEIVES HONORABLE MENTION ON ALL-ROOKIE LIST: Red Claws rookie guard Jamar Smith also received recognition from the NBA Development League today, landing on the 2011 All-Rookie Second Team. Smith had an outstanding rookie season despite being hampered much of the season with a painful foot injury. Considered among the best shooters in the league, Smith averaged 13.5 points per game and finished 4th overall in 3-pointers made (2.2 per game) and 6th in 3-point percentage (.432).
“The Red
Claws organization takes the “development” in NBA Development League very
seriously,” Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings said. “We had
as many as seven rookies on our roster at one time this season, and they were
forced to learn and contribute quickly. I am enormously proud of how our players
grew, adapted and continued to improve this season, and today, DeShawn Sims is
Rookie of the Year, Magnum Rolle is in the NBA Playoffs with the Atlanta Hawks
and Jamar Smith is on the All-Rookie Team.”
