Celtics’ Jamar Smith Headlines Maine Hopefuls

PORTLAND, MAINE (October 2, 2012)– The Maine Red Claws today announced that seven former Red Claws players are currently participating in NBA training camps. The seven will look to crack opening day rosters for the 2012-13 NBA season, which tips off on October 30.

Among the hopefuls is Jamar Smith, a rookie guard with the Red Claws in 2010-11, who earned a partially guaranteed contract with the Boston Celtics and an invite to their 2012 training camp. Smith, a member of the 2011 NBA Development League All-Rookie Second Team had an outstanding rookie season with the Red Claws before taking his skills overseas to the Czech Republic last season. He had an impressive Summer League campaign for the Celtics this past summer, earning him a chance to compete for a spot on the 2012-13 roster. Former Red Claw Avery Bradley, also a member of the Celtics, is currently sidelined with injury.

Six other former Red Claws are also competing for a spot in the opening day roster including Terrel Harris, who is in camp with the Miami Heat. Last season, Harris became the first former Red Claw to win an NBA Championship as a member of the Heat. Xavier Silas will look to return to the Philadelphia 76ers after joining the team shortly before the 2012 NBA Playoffs. Silas, who suffered a scary facial injury while with the Sixers' Summer League team this past summer, also participated in the team's 2011 training camp before joining the Red Claws last season.Hamady Ndiaye, a 7-0 center with the Red Claws last season who is currently in camp with Sacramento, is no stranger to NBA training camps. A 2010 Draft selection of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ndiaye joined the Red Claws last season after having spent the previous two seasons in the Washington Wizards’ organization.

Chris Wright will also look to make a return to the NBA with a strong training camp performance. A rookie last season with the Red Claws, Wright was signed early in the season by the Golden State Warriors, splitting the season between the NBA club and their NBADL affiliate in North Dakota. This season, Wright will look to find a home with the New Orleans Hornets. Trey Gilder is looking to stick in the NBA. Gilder, a member of the inaugural 2009-10 Red Claws, is in camp with the Utah Jazz. Sherron Collins, assigned by the Charlotte Bobcats during the 2009-10 season, has been added to San Antonio’s training camp roster.
