Teams with Head Coach Dave Leitao to Lead 2011-12 Maine Red Claws

PORTLAND, ME (November 3,2011) – The Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, today announced that 15-year NBA veteran Donyell Marshall has been named the team’s assistant coach under Head Coach Dave Leitao. Marshall, the fourth pick in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, played for eight teams during his tenure in the NBA: Minnesota, Golden State, Utah, Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Seattle and, most recently, Philadelphia.

“I am excited to have Donyell Marshall on staff,” said Leitao. “He knows what it takes to be an NBA player, and he has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with our players. I am excited at the way this season is shaping up.”

Marshall, 38, joins the Red Claws as assistant coach following a stint as the assistant coach for George Washington University. Prior to GW, Marshall was a pre-game and post-game analyst for the Red Philadelphia 76ers on Comcast SportsNet. He retired from a 15-year career in the NBA in the summer of 2009.

A native of Reading, PA, Marshall played three seasons for the University of Connecticut is a member of the UConn Basketball All-Century Team. Marshall held the school's single-game records for points (855), field goals made (307) and free throws made (200) until they were broken this past season by Kemba Walker. While at UConn, Marshall was a 1994 consensus All-America First Team selection and the Big East Conference Player of the Year for 1993-94. As a testament to his commitment to the betterment of student-athletes, Marshall made a $100,000 contribution to his alma mater in 1996. Marshall's generous donation, to be applied toward a men's basketball scholarship, was matched by UConn which now bestows the annual Donyell Marshall scholarship. Marshall is married to Leea and has two daughters, Taylor and Devynn, and four sons, Terrance, Marquis, Paryss and Donyell, Jr.

“I am happy to welcome Donyell Marshall to the Red Claws coaching staff,” said Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings. “Together with Coach Leitao, we have a formidable coaching staff, and I am excited to get the season underway.”
