It’s March and that means one thing to basketball fans…March Madness. You had the opportunity to participate in the NCAA Tournament while you were at NC State. What are some of the things you remember most about playing in the tournament?
The things I remember most about the tourney are the games themselves. They were a lot of fun; the deeper you go, the more fun they were. Also, playing against teams you never played before was fun; the most memorable thing is the atmosphere.
The Men’s NCAA Tournament has seen some memorable upsets in its years, but has yet to witness a #16 seed upset a #1 seed, do you think that will ever happen?
Yes. I think that it can happen because of the amount of kids leaving so early; and plus anything is possible.
Most people say that college is the best four years of their life; do you have any funny stories or pranks that you remember happening while you were in school?
I have quite a few stories, but one that sticks out is when we went to Hawaii and our coach was mad at some guys for getting sun burned. I will never forget that.
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is known for their conference tournament every year; do you think playing those extra games before the NCAA Tournament hurts or helps the teams in the ACC?
I think that it could hurt the ACC teams because you put a lot into it and then you turn around and play the NCAA Tourney. You could be physically and emotionally drained for those games.
When you came to NC State as a freshman, what was the best piece of advice you got from an upper-classman? What would you tell the incoming freshman now?
I didn’t really get any advice from the upperclassmen while at NC State, but I would tell the incoming freshman to make sure that they get their studies done before they go out having a good time.
Do the experiences that you had in college help you now as coach in the D-League?
I don’t think so because I was so young then and it’s different being a coach.
Who do you think is going to win the NCAA Tournament this year?
It’s really up in the air this year, but if I had to pick one. I might go with Duke or North Carolina, just because I am an ACC guy.
Any sleepers or “Cinderella’s” who you think can make a run in the tournament this year?
I think that Butler and Davidson could be dangerous in the tournament. Don’t sleep on Clemson either.
Some players have made their careers by having breakout performances during the NCAA Tournament. Are there any specific player(s) you remember watching and just being like “WOW!”?
I remember Fennis Dembo (University of Wyoming ’85-‘88) dropping 41 on UCLA against Reggie Miller in the 1987 Tournament and Glen Rice (University of Michigan ’85-‘89) leading his team to the 1989 Championship. Also, Wally Szczerbiak (Miami University in Ohio) had a huge tourney run in 1999.
