| Quote of the Week |
"The D-Fenders enjoyed a successful second season in the NBA D-League. The D-Fenders not only amassed the second-best record in the league, but did a tremendous job developing and producing future NBA players, as Jelani McCoy and Stephane Lasme received NBA call-ups, while Coby Karl performed very well with the D-Fenders during his assignments from the Lakers. Their on-court success was one of the many bright spots in a banner season for the D-League." - Dan Reed, President of the NBA Development League |
| NBA Gatorade Call-Ups |
29 This season saw a D-League record of 29 Gatorade Call-Ups (18 players) from the D-League to the NBA. | 2007-08 Season Recap |
|
In only their second year in existence, the Los Angeles D-Fenders experienced several milestones during the 2007-08 season. Los Angeles finished the 2007-08 regular season with a 32-18 record, earning themselves a trip to the 2008 NBA D-League Playoffs presented by Delta. The D-Fenders, who finished with the second best record in the NBA D-League, hosted their postseason opening round contest, a 102-95 victory at STAPLES Center over the Colorado 14ers. The D-Fenders were unable to capture the NBA D-League title, falling in the semifinals, 97-90 to the eventual champions Idaho Stampede.
On November 29th, D-Fenders first round draft choice (8th overall) Jelani McCoy became the first player in Los Angeles franchise history to earn an NBA Gatorade Call-Up when he was signed by the Denver Nuggets. Later in the season, D-Fenders teammate and Co-NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year, Stephane Lasme earned his NBA Gatorade Call-Up to the Miami Heat.
Lakers guard Coby Karl made the transition in his D-League assignments to the D-Fenders with ease, averaging 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in his three assignments (17 games) during the regular season. Karl joined fellow Lakers teammate, Jordan Farmar, as the only other player in league history to suit-up and play in both an NBA and D-League game in the same day. On February 19th, Karl guided the D-Fenders to a victory over the visiting Tulsa 66ers, dropping in 15 points, six assists and five boards; he then transitioned to the Lakers locker room to change uniforms before scoring five points in the win over the Atlanta Hawks.
Los Angeles was no stranger to the NBA D-League featured events during the 2007-08 season; along with hosting a first round game in the playoffs, the D-Fenders fared well at the 2008 NBA D-League All-Star Game presented by Spalding and the 2008 NBA D-League Showcase presented by adidas. D-Fenders standouts, Sean Banks and Jelani McCoy, earned roster spots on the "Blue Team" at the All-Star Game and were joined in New Orleans by the D-Fenders coaching staff, head coach Dan Panaggio and assistant coaches Chucky Brown and Rasheed Hazzard. The D-Fenders players and coached led the Blue Team to a decisive 117-99 triumph over the Red Team. At the D-League Showcase, the D-Fenders entered the event with the top record in the D-League and were one of four teams to leave Boise, ID with a perfect 2-0 mark at the event, including a victory over the San Antonio Spurs owned and operated affiliate, the Austin Toros in the showcase's marquee matchup.

| Banks, Lasme and McCoy Earn D-League Awards |
|
Forward Stephane Lasme, who earned the D-League's 19th GATORADE Call-Up of the year to the Miami Heat from the Los Angeles D-Fenders, and Mouhamed Sene, the Seattle SuperSonics center who played with the Idaho Stampede while on assignment, have been selected as the NBA Development League's Co-Defensive Players of the Year by a vote of the League's head coaches.
Forward Sean Banks earned Gatorade All NBA D-League First Team honors and Center Jelani McCoy earned Gatorade All NBA D-League Third Team honors.
Prior to his Call-Up to Miami, Lasme played in 37 games (12 starts) for the D-Fenders and averaged 10.6 points, shooting 52 percent from the field, to go with 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 28.9 minutes. Lasme recorded double-figure rebounding efforts nine times, including five double-doubles (points/rebounds). Lasme tallied five or more blocks on six occasions, including a season-high eight blocks on Dec. 10, 2007 at Utah.
Banks, from the University of Memphis, is currently in his second season in Los Angeles and ranks fourth among D-League players with 21.7 points per game and has earned Performer of the Week honors for the Weeks of Feb. 2 and Mar. 31.
McCoy, the D-Fenders first round choice in the 2007 NBA D-League Draft, earned the first NBA Gatorade Call-Up in franchise history on November 29 when the Denver Nuggets made him the 2nd call-up of the season. For the D-Fenders this season, McCoy ranks in the top 5 of the NBA D-League for rebounds (5th at 7.9 rpg), field goal percentage (1st at 68.8%) and blocked shots (2nd at 2.1 bpg). |
| D-Fenders 2007-08 Fan of the Year |
|
As part of the D-Fenders Fan Appreciation Game on April 11th, D-Fenders assistant coach Chucky Brown presented Robert Sylvester, the 2007-08 D-Fenders Fan of the Year, with a team autographed basketball in recognition of his support throughout the season. Sylvester, an avid bowler, could be seen or heard at almost every single home game this season at STAPLES Center. Whether sitting courtside on the baseline in his D-Fenders hat and gold D-Fenders t-shirt or screaming his infamous "D-Fense" chants from behind the home team bench, Robert was always dedicated to helping the D-Fenders bring home the victory. A longtime Lakers fan, this was Robert's first year as a Lakers season-ticket holder and was a crucial part in the D-Fenders record season.
