D-Fenders Earn Overtime Win in Ontario

ONTARIO, CA – The Los Angeles D-Fenders pulled out a dramatic 120-117 overtime preseason win against the Bakersfield Jam on Saturday night in the first-ever NBA Development League game at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Deadlocked at 117 with 8.9 seconds left in overtime, the D-Fenders pushed the ball and newly-acquired Darnell Dodson drilled the eventual game-winning three-pointer from the wing with 3.5 seconds remaining. Dodson, who helped the D-Fenders shoot 42.3 percent from three-point range on the evening (11-of-26), totaled 14 points (3-of-4 3FG) and seven rebounds.

After two quarters, the D-Fenders (1-0) carried a 58-47 lead into the locker room after holding the Jam to 37.5 percent shooting. However, the Jam outscored the D-Fenders by 13 in the third quarter and grasped onto a two-point lead late in the fourth until Courtney Fortson knocked down a corner three to regain the lead with just under seven seconds remaining. Moments later, Bakersfield’s Stephen Dennis split a pair of free-throws to send it to overtime.

Orien Greene (22 points [8-11 FG], 6 assists, 5 steals), Los Angeles Lakers assignment player Darius Johnson-Odom (22 points, 6 rebounds) and newcomer Jarrid Famous (20 points [7-12 FG], 9 rebounds) all scored 20-plus points to guide the D-Fenders offensive attack. In addition, Courtney Fortson controlled the tempo of the game with an 18-point, 10-assist double-double while Gary Flowers contributed a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Dennis led all scorers on the evening after he totaled 30 points and four steals for the Jam (0-1). Meanwhile, Damion James tallied 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, Cam Tatum chipped in 13 points, Adam Koch added 11 points and Isma’il Muhammad pitched in 10 points to round out the five Jam players in double-figures.

The D-Fenders, the reigning Development Champion award recipient (given to the team that best embodies the D-League’s goals of developing NBA talent), start the regular season on November 28th at home versus Idaho. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
