D-Fenders Announce 2012-13 Training Camp Roster and Draft Selections
The Los Angeles D-Fenders have finalized their 2012-13 training camp roster, it was announced today. The D-Fenders assembled the roster by acquiring seven players from the 2012 NBA D-League Draft, retaining four players from the 2011-12 season, selecting three players from a local tryout, reacquiring one player whom they held rights to and completing a pre-arranged draft day trade with Fort Wayne.
“We are happy with how we were able to construct our team for training camp,” said Head Coach Reggie Theus. “We believe we have a group of skilled players who are motivated to work hard and prepared to compete to make our opening day roster.”
Coming off of the best season in NBA D-League history, the D-Fenders, who won an NBA D-League record 38 games in 2011-12 and earned the Development Champion award, held the final pick in all six rounds and an additional eighth round pick that was obtained from Iowa last year. The D-Fenders used their draft picks to select Rashad Bishop / Cincinnati in the fourth round (64th overall), Phil Jones / UNC Charlotte in the fifth round (80th overall), Tristan Thompson / North Texas in the sixth round (96th overall), Cecil Brown / UC Santa Barbara in the seventh round (112th overall), Mamadou Diarra / Chaminade in the eighth round (121st overall) and Eniel Polynice / Seton Hall in the eighth round (128th overall).
In addition, the D-Fenders drafted Dairese Gary on behalf of Fort Wayne to complete a previously arranged deal. In the trade, the D-Fenders acquired Jarrid Famous along with Darnell Dodson, a fourth round pick in the draft, in exchange for Gary.
Famous, a 6-10, 240 pound forward out of South Florida, returns to the NBA D-League after playing for Memphis during the NBA preseason and spending time with Milwaukee (2012 Las Vegas Summer League) and Indiana (2012 AirTran Orlando Summer League) during the NBA Summer League. Prior to signing to an NBA roster, Famous played in 16 games for Fort Wayne and Iowa during the 2011-12 NBA Development League season, averaging 13.9 points (.494 FG%) and 9.8 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game.
Selected in the fourth round (60th overall) of the 2012 NBA D-League Draft by the Mad Ants, Dodson played for Southern Miss during the 2011-12 season after transferring from the University of Kentucky in 2010. A 6-7, 215 pound guard/forward, Dodson averaged 11.2 points and 4.9 rebounds in 11.8 minutes for the Golden Eagles in his final collegiate season.
The D-Fenders also announced four players who are returning from the 2011-12 roster along with three players selected from local tryouts and one player who the team held the rights of to join the aforementioned players in training camp: Gary Flowers (returning) / Southern Miss, Courtney Fortson (returning) / Arkansas, Orien Greene (returning) / Louisiana-Lafayette, Jamario Moon (returning) / Meridian CC, Augustine Okosun / Northwood (local tryout), Renardo Sidney / Mississippi State (local tryout), Anthony Stover / UCLA (local tryout), and Kevin Kruger (player rights).
The D-Fenders open the season a game at home against Idaho on November 28th before embarking on a three-game road trip and then returning home on December 7th. Returning for their sixth season of competition in 2011-12, the D-Fenders will once again play all home games at Toyota Sports Center, the Lakers practice facility in El Segundo, CA.
