D-Fenders Slide Past
Vipers for 33rd Win
HIDALGO, TX – The Los Angeles D-Fenders eclipsed the franchise mark for most regular season wins after topping the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 105-94 on Friday night. The win bested the 2007-08 D-Fenders squad that won 32 games, and continued the impressive stretch for the D-Fenders (33-11) in which they are 16-1 since January 30th.
In a game that featured 13 lead changes along with eight ties, the D-Fenders’ defense once again made the difference as they managed to hold the league-leading Vipers offense to just 39.8 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers. What’s further, in the brief two-game set between the teams, the D-Fenders limited the Vipers, who were averaging 110.6 points per game on 46.8 percent shooting, to an average of 91.5 points on 41.4 percent shooting.
On the offensive end, Mardy Collins (19 points [8-13 FG], 5 rebounds, 4 assists), Jamario Moon (18 points [7-9 FG], 11 rebounds), and Elijah Millsap (17 points, 7 rebounds) guided the D-Fenders. Additionally, Zach Andrews registered 14 points along with nine rebounds, Christian Eyenga recorded 13 points to go with five assists and Otis George scored 11 points in the win. What’s more, Malcolm Thomas led all players with 12 rebounds, and pitched in eight points along with two blocks for the D-Fenders.
Rio Grande Valley (22-24) saw four players in double-figures, led by Marshall Brown (25 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals) as well as Vance Cooksey (22 points) who both played off the bench. Meanwhile, Greg Smith contributed an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double and Will Conroy scored 10 points in the loss.
After successfully completing a four-game season sweep of the Vipers, the D-Fenders will return home after a brief two-game road trip to face the Reno Bighorns on Wednesday, March 28th. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. PST and is available for viewing online through NBA Futurecast.
