Storm Lake Native Returns to Energy After Two Years Away

DES MOINES, IA, August 22, 2013 –The Iowa Energy have named Nate Bjorkgren the franchise’s new head coach at a press conference today.

“Nate Bjorkgren is the perfect coach for the Iowa Energy,” said owner Jerry Crawford. “We announced that he would be our head coach when Nick Nurse left. Unfortunately, our confidence in him prompted Golden State to hire him and put him first in North Dakota then in Santa Cruz.” Crawford added, “All Nate did there was take them to the championship game against Nick Nurse.”

“The Iowa Energy is the most successful winter season franchise in Iowa history. Nate Bjorkgren will help us make sure that continues,” added Crawford.

Bjorkgren began his professional coaching career with the Energy in their inaugural season (2007-2008). After two seasons on the staff, the Storm Lake native was promoted to lead assistant under former coach Nick Nurse.

During his time with the Energy, Iowa posted a combined 124-76 record. The Energy also had back to back 37-13 seasons in each of his last two seasons and captured three straight Eastern Conference titles.

The week of the 2011 NBA D-League Championship Series, Bjorkgren was named “Head Coach in Waiting” by the Energy. Later that summer, the Golden State Warriors offered him the head coaching position of their D-League affiliate (Dakota Wizards) prior to Nurse’s departure from Iowa. The Wizards moved to Santa Cruz prior to the 2012-13 season, where Bjorkgren led the Warriors to the 2013 NBA D-League championship series.

In two seasons as a head coach in the D-League, Bjorkgren has amassed a 61-39 regular season record. His 2012-13 Santa Cruz squad was the #1 ranked defensive team in the D-League and his 2011-12 Dakota team was the #3 ranked defensive team in the league.

“It is very special to be able to come home and have the Energy name me their head coach. I have incredible memories from my time with the franchise and I look forward to making a run at another NBA D-League Championship,” said Bjorkgren.

Prior to joining the Energy staff in 2007-08, Bjorkgren was named Arizona High School Coach of the Year where he was head coach of Cactus Spring High School in Cave Creek. Bjorkgren graduated from Buena Vista University in 1998 with a degree in Exercise Science.
