Rookies and second year NBA players could see playing time in Boise

Boise, Idaho (June 29, 2009) – The National Basketball Association announced today that the Denver Nuggets and the Portland Trail Blazers will be the two affiliate teams for the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League during the 2009-10 season.

“We have known the ownership and staff of the Idaho Stampede for many years,” said Nuggets Vice President and General Manager, Mark Warkentein. “They are one of the best minor league basketball groups in the world. The Denver Nuggets look forward to a long and mutually beneficial association, on and off the basketball court, with the Idaho Stampede.”

Each NBA team can assign up to two players to a D-League roster as long as those players are in their first or second NBA season. Players can remain with the minor-league team for as long as the parent club wishes, and be recalled to the NBA at any time. But players can be sent to the D-League a maximum of three times during the season.

“I am excited about our association with the Idaho Stampede” said Nuggets Head Coach, George Karl. “I have known Bill Ilett for a number of years and respect the way the Stampede organization is run. Coach Gates and his staff have always been very helpful to me. Hopefully we will be able to assign players as early as this year to them, for playing time and development.”

The NBA Development League will again have 16 teams playing in 2009-10, including two new teams playing in the North East – the Maine Red Claws, who will play in Portland, Maine, and a team in Springfield, Mass.

“As a coach I am thrilled with the continuation of our affiliation with the Portland Trail Blazers and our new relationship with the Denver Nuggets”, said Idaho Stampede Head Coach, Bryan Gates. “We couldn’t ask for two better teams to work with.”

As part of the upcoming season, the Stampede will promote at least one NBA Affiliate Night, with special activities planned to showcase the NBA affiliate team. Some of the special items included with Stampede Affiliate Nights during past seasons were, each team playing in official NBA affiliate uniforms, poster give-a-ways, mascot performances, Dance Team performances and much more. Details about affiliate nights for the 2009-10 season will be announced in the near future.
