Joel Abelson Named Assistant Coach

BOISE, ID, October 6, 2009 — The Idaho Stampede announced today that Joel Abelson has been named assistant coach for the 2009-10 season. He returns to Boise after serving as the assistant coach of the Stampede under Bryan Gates last season.

“I am extremely excited to have Joel join my staff,” said Stampede head coach Bob MacKinnon. “His experience with great coaches like Bryan Gates and Bob Hill makes him one of the most up-and-coming coaches in our league. I am thrilled to add his enthusiasm and knowledge to our organization.”

Abelson was integral in leading the Stampede to the playoffs during the 2008-09 season. Before joining the Stampede, he worked under head coach Joey Meyer with the Tulsa 66ers as an assistant coach. The University of Michigan graduate worked for the Charlotte Bobcats basketball operations in 2007 and at Abunassar Impact Basketball in Las Vegas, training NBA stars such as Baron Davis, Jermaine O’Neal, Chauncey Billups, and Paul Pierce. He spent this past summer working for NBA coaching veteran, Bob Hill, training Blake Griffin and other NBA players as well as coaching during the 2009 NBA Development League Pre-Draft Camp.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be back with the Stampede and in the Treasure Valley community, said Abelson. “Its great to be a part of an organization with a history of winning and I look forward to helping Coach Mac continue the Stampede tradition!”
