Stampede Coach Bryan Gates Signs Two-Year Extension

BOISE, Idaho (May 24, 2007) – The Idaho Stampede announce that Head Coach Bryan Gates signed a two-year extension to remain with the franchise through the 2008-09 season. The 2006-07 NBA D-League Dennis Johnson Coach of the Year award winner will be entering his eighth overall season with the Stampede, serving in various roles since the inception of the franchise and bolsters a resume that includes coaching in five professional basketball leagues. Gates’ overall head coaching record is 164-85, a .659 winning percentage.

“I’m very excited to be back with the Stampede, and look forward to making another run at an NBA Development League championship,” said Gates. “We are ready for the challenges and excitement that come with the success of this past season.”

Gates finished his first season as head coach of the Stampede in 2006-07 with a 33-17 record, which tied the D-League record for most wins and highest winning percentage in a season, won the Western Division title and earned a bye into the Western Division Final during the 2007 NBA Development League playoffs.

Led by Gates, the Stampede finished the 2006-07 regular season as the top team in the NBA D-League in defensive rebounding, opponent points per game, opponent field goal percentage and assists per game.

Gates has fine-tuned his coaching skills under former Stampede head coaches; Bobby Dye, Russ Bergman, Rory White and Larry Krystkowiak. During the 2005-06 season, Gates was an Assistant Coach in the NBA Development League with the Austin Toros, working under former NBA player and Toros head coach Dennis Johnson.

Gates began his career with the Stampede as a coaching intern under head coach Bobby Dye during the first season of the organization in 1997. He has since coached with the IBA’s Rapid City Thrillers, CBL’s Hickory Nutz, USBL’s Oklahoma Storm, and the Beirut Blue Stars in Lebanon.

“Bringing Coach Gates back for the next two seasons is a huge success for us,” said Steve Brandes, Stampede President & General Manager. “His track record of winning and success on the court will add to the excitement of the upcoming season as reigning Western Division champions.”

Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Coach Gates attended Boise State University from 1991-96. He currently resides in Boise.

In other personnel moves, the Stampede announce that Steve Brandes has been promoted to President & General Manager. Brandes started with the Stampede in 2002 as an account executive.
