MAINE CLAWS THEIR WAY TO VICTORY AT 2013 NBA D-LEAGUE SHOWCASE

RENO, NEV. -- There was plenty of offense on display when the Maine Red Claws collided with the Bakersfield Jam at the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase on Wednesday. Maine pulled out the 131-124 victory in what was the highest scoring game here in Reno this week.

The Red Claws shot 52-percent as they connected on 45-of-86 attempts from the field. It was only a smidge better than the 48-percent shooting by Bakersfield. Maine had six players score in double figures.

DaJuan Summers has put together quite the showcase here in Reno. He tallied a season-high 31 points vs. Tulsa yesterday and followed that up today with 29 points and eight rebounds in the victory over Bakersfield. Summers was waived by the Charlotte Bobcats before the season opener and signed with the Red Claws in December.

Summers’ timely baskets helped Maine sustain a lead as Bakersfield made a run in the fourth quarter to cut the Red Claws’ lead that was as high as 15 to only four. Twice in the last two minutes at 124-120 and 126-122, he came through with baskets and padded the lead back to six.

Shelvin Mack made his return to the Red Claws and his impact was noticeable early as he closed out the first-half with 15 points. He finished with 24 points on 9-of-19 shooting. Mack was waived by the Washington Wizards on Monday and was eligible to return for the game on Wednesday.

Champ Oguchi finished with a season-high 20 points and connected on 5-of-9 attempts from behind the arc, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Maine a 69-68 lead going into the half. Micah Downs added 26 points for Maine.

Jerel McNeal had a team-high 27 points and five steals for Bakersfield, while Damion James added 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Brian Butch recorded a double-double with a season-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.

These were the final showcase appearances for both Maine and Bakersfield. They will both return to action on Friday.
