FORT WAYNE, Indiana -- The Erie BayHawks spoiled opening night for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants as hot-shooting guards Nick Covington and D.J. Kennedy led the visiting team to a 109-100 victory Friday night in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Fort Wayne struggled all night to get their offense untracked, and the BayHawks took advantage in the second quarter. Erie started that quarter with a 19-6 run that pushed their lead to 21 points after back to back three pointers by Nick Covington. The BayHawks kept the heat on the Ants and pushed the lead to 24 points before the Ants made a run to close out the half and get the halftime score to 58-43.

After a third quarter that saw Erie maintain a 15 point lead, the Antsí bench players Sadiel Rojas, Mike Anderson, and Darryl Partin came into the game and gave the team a much needed lift that got the lead down to 11 in the final stanza. The lead inched back up to 17, but the Ants went on a 18-7 run to cut the lead down to six with :48.9 seconds remaining in the game. The BayHawks remained poised, however, and Tirrel Baines hit three free throws down the stretch to ice the game and secure the 109-100 win.

The BayHawks were led by Nick Covington with 27 points (5 of 6 three pointers and 10 of 12 overall), and D.J. Kennedy continued his mastery of Fort Wayne with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Ron Howard led the Mad Ants with 27 points and 7 rebounds, while Walker Russell, Jr. chipped in with 17 points and 6 assists. Indiana Pacer assignees Miles Plumlee (5 points and 12 rebounds) and Orlando Johnson (15 points and 6 rebounds) had solid debuts for the home team.
