MAINE TOPS SIOUX FALLS AT 2012 NBA D-LEAGUE SHOWCASE

RENO, Nevada -- Charles Garcia is the prototype. Jerome Randle, the underdog.

Give the edge to the underdog, with a little help from Xavier Silas, who scored 21 points as the Maine Red Claws defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce, 98-92 in the opening game of Day 2 of the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase.

Randle, who was in training camp with the Dallas Mavericks, finished with 11 points, six assists and four rebounds for Maine, which improved to 6-12 on the season.

Not drafted in 2010, Randle, the 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year at California, plied his trade in Turkey, averaging 17.5 points and 3.9 assists for Aliaga. An intelligent lead guard with NBA caliber quickness and shooting ability, Randle is out to show that at 5-10 he can compete physically in a league that places a premium on size at the point guard position.

Garcia led Sioux Falls with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Mason Jr. and Casey Mitchell each added 15 points for the Skyforce.

Garcia, who bounced around in college before settling at Seattle University and garnering NBA interest, has all the physical attributes NBA teams look for. He's tall (6-10), long, athletic and can play both inside and out. He initially went overseas last season, but returned for a short stint in the NBA D-League with Iowa and Sioux Falls. He's endured questions about his character and professionalism, but has really put his best foot forward this season for the Skyforce.

Former NBA star Ricky Davis had a solid all-round game for the Red Claws, finishing with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Davis last played in the NBA during the 2009-10 season, and has struggled with injuries in recent years.

Maine plays again tomorrow against Los Angeles. Sioux Falls (5-13) also returns to action tomorrow taking on Texas.
