Austin, TX March 23, 2010- In their first home game after a month long road trip, the Toros provided the crowd with a win over the Springfield Armor at the Austin Convention Center Tuesday night, 118-109.
Looking for their first road win of the season, the Armor managed to go on a 15-0 run in the first quarter, but it was not enough to stop the Toros. Led by Dwayne Jones, who tapped the ball in with 0.2 seconds left in the quarter, the Toros ended the quarter on an 8-2 run in the final 90 seconds of the quarter. Springfield held the lead at the buzzer, 25-17.
The Toros battled back in the second quarter to close in on the Armorís lead. After Michael Joinerís three-point jumper, the Toros closed the gap at 38-34. Curtis Jerrells connected on his second long-shot of the night with :55 left in the first half. Springfield led 51-43 at the break.
Austin fought back in the third quarter, outscoring Springfield 26-23, with everyone on the team making at least one basket. Springfield continued to lead at the end of the quarter 74-69.
The Toros kept coming within a possession of the Armor in the fourth. The Armor was able to stretch their lead to eight but Jerrells persevered and was able to give the Toros the lead (98-97) after making a long shot with 3:17 left. Abdulai Jalloh gave the Armor a 101-100 lead after making both free throws with :40 left in regulation. Eddie Basden sent the game in to overtime after making a freebie with :02 left.
Dwayne Jonesí slam dunk in overtime fired up the Toros and they never looked back. The Toros are now 5-0 when games go in to overtime.
adidas player of the game Jerrells led all in scoring with 28 points, and added four assists. Marcus Williams finished the night with 21 points and eight assists. Jones added another double-double (23 points, 14 rebounds). Michael Joiner had a season high 18 points. Eddie Basden added 10 points.
Justin Hawkins led the Armor with 26 points, five rebounds
