Toros Prevail in Back-to-Back Series Against the D-Fenders

Austin, TX January 29 – The Austin Toros increased their win streak to six in front of a sold out crowd at the Austin Convention Center against the L.A. D-Fenders, 115-111.

The Toros jumped out to 31-26 lead at the end of the first quarter, behind Dwayne Jones’ 11 points and seven rebounds.

“It’s exciting. I’m glad we’re headed in the right direction,” said Toros Center Jones. “We were playing .500 basketball so it’s good to get back in rhythm before playing in a new arena.”

L.A. battled back in the second quarter, limiting the Toros field goals to 5-of-18 (27.8%). Michael Fey was the only D-Fender with more than one basket in the quarter, converting 5-of-9. The Toros were able to hold their lead with consistency at the line making 14-of-15 (93.3%) free throws in the quarter. The Toros led 55-51 at the half.

Determined to keep the lead, the Toros started the third quarter with an 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the quarter. L.A. fought back midway through the quarter with a 13-4 run. Spurs assignee Malik Hairston had 10 of his 30 points in the quarter. The Toros ended the quarter with an 82-77 lead.

The Toros had their largest lead of the night with 4:19 to go in the fourth, 104-91. The D-Fenders fought back with a 15-4 lead behind Hairston’s fellow high school teammate Joe Crawford. With 0:44 to go in the game, Fey helped the D-Fenders come within two, 108-110. Eddie Basden locked in the Toros win making both free throws with 0:17 left.

Jones added his 20th double-double of the season with 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Toros. Hairston (30), Alonzo Gee (21), Basden (10), and Roderick Riley (10) scored in double figures.

Fey led the D-Fenders with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Five other D-Fenders scored in double figures: Crawford (22), Ryan Forehan-Kelly (19), Dar Tucker (12), Diamon Simpson (12), and Horace Wormely (10).

The D-Fenders (8-13) will continue their eight-game road trip, when they head to McAllen, TX to face the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Sunday.
