Mike Harris scored a game high 28 points and Houston Rockets assignee Joey Dorsey muscled down 17 rebounds as the Rio Grande Valley Vipers split their weekend season opening road series with the Austin Toros after their 109-102 win on Saturday night. The win was just the second ever win in the Texas stats capitol for the Vipers.
The Vipers went into the locker room after 24 minutes of action with a one point lead 51-50 after Jonathan Wallace nailed down a long jumper from the right-wing as time expired. For the second straight night the boards were dominated by Rio Grande Valley as they out-rebounded Austin 46-33 en-route to the win. The Vipers also forced 16 Austin turnovers and blocked four shots. The Vipers outscored Austin in the second half 58-52 to clinch the win.
Harris, the former Rice Owl and Rockets forward, posted the first double-double of his Vipers career as he added 10 rebounds to his 28 point effort. Dorsey earned his first double-double of 2009-2010 as he scored 22 points and adding a blocked shot as well. Garrett Temple, Antonio Anderson and Ernest Scott each chipped in with 11, while Wallace added 10 points rounding out the double-digit scorers for RGV. Anderson also added a team high nine assists in the Vipers win.
Alonzo Gee led the Toros in scoring for the second straight night as he posted 23 points in the Toro loss. Dwayne Jones for the first time in his Toro career failed to post a double-double against Rio Grande Valley. Jones finished with 17 points while hauling in nine rebounds.
