14ers Use Big Third Quarter To Hand Vipers Sixth Straight Loss

HIDALGO, Texas, Jan. 14, 2009 - Josh Davis scored 31 points to lead six players in double figures Wednesday night and the Colorado 14ers used a big third quarter to hand the Rio Grande Valley Vipers their sixth straight loss, 129-110.

New Jersey Nets assignee Sean Williams scored 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting and swept 16 rebounds for the 14ers, who turned a six-point halftime deficit into a 96-83 lead with a 37-point third quarter.

In the pivotal third period, Williams scored 10 points and Joe Dabbert added nine. Meanwhile, the Vipers managed just 18 points.

Davis scored 10 points and Eddie Gill added eight in the fourth quarter as the 14ers maintained a double-digit advantage and widened the margin to 23 points.

The Vipers grabbed a 65-59 halftime lead as Alpha Bangura (18 points) and Marcus Hubbard (16) combined for 34 points. Davis kept the 14ers close with 16 points and gave Colorado the lead for good at 71-69 with a layup at the 6:36 mark of the third quarter.

Dabbert and Gill also had double-doubles as Dabbert grabbed 10 boards and Gill collected 14 points and 14 assists. Dominique Coleman scored 12 points and Jamar Brown added 10 for the 14ers, who shot a sizzling 62.5 percent (50-of-80) from the field, including 10-of-17 from 3-point range.

Bangura scored 26 points, Hubbard added 20 and Trent Strickland, Craig Winder and Alton Ford added 14 apiece for the Vipers, who shot 45 percent (43-of-95) and made just one 3-pointer in seven tries.

The Vipers (7-14) visit Tulsa on Friday night. The 14ers do not play until Tuesday, when they host Albuquerque.
