Sioux Falls 99, Colorado 98
DENVER, Dec. 17, 2008 – Rookie Gary Forbes knocked down two free throws with 4.5 seconds left to give the Sioux Falls Skyforce a thrilling 99-98 victory over the host Colorado 14ers Wednesday at the Broomfield Event Center.
Sioux Falls improved to 7-2 on the season, and in doing so became the first team to hold Colorado, the D-League’s highest-scoring offense, under 100 points.
The game featured 20 lead changes. After Forbes' hit the freebies, the Sioux Falls defense blocked Eddie Gill’s last-second effort to win it for Colorado.
“It could have went either way with that call at the end on Eddie,” Skyforce coach Nate Tibbetts said. “The two teams didn’t stop battling for the whole 48 minutes.”
Sioux Falls held Colorado to just 37 percent shooting on the night, and 24.5 points below its season average of 122.5 per game. Forbes scored 17 of his game-high 26 points with a perfect 6-for-6 shooting performance in the first half. The backcourt duo of Carl Elliott and Gary Ervin each added 17 points in the win.
Sonny Weems led Colorado with 24 points. Gill had 23 with seven rebounds, 10 assists, and two blocks. Cheikh Samb added 10 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks.
The 14ers travel to Tulsa to take on the 66ers Saturday night, while Sioux Falls returns home on Friday to host the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
