AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 19 -- Stanley Asumnu scored 13 points on Wednesday to lead the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to a 77-70 road win over the Austin Toros in both teams' preseason opener at Eastside Memorial High School.
The Toros were led by Kris Collins and Marcus Williams who scored 12 points each.
"I'm proud of our guys," said Vipers' head coach Clay Moser after the game. "We gutted out a win against a good Austin Toros team. We still have a lot of work to do. This is a great teaching tool and the win is a bonus."
The Toros kept it close throughout the first half, which featured eight ties and lead changes, but went into halftime trailing 41-36.
Rio Grande Valley built an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Austin cut the deficit to six on an Andrew Francis shot with 2:53 remaining. The Toros were unable to close the gap any further despite five points from Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson in the final three minutes.
"It was our first game and we are still trying to get used to each other," Toros' first round pick Robert McKiver said. "This game will help us get better as a team and be something for us to build on for the next game and the season."
