Sioux Falls 114, Iowa 96
SIOUX FALLS, S.D., March 22 – Carl Elliott posted a season-high 29 points and David Bailey recorded 26 as the Sioux Falls Skyforce defeated the Iowa Energy 114-96 on Saturday night. Despite dressing only seven players following Kasib Powell’s GATORADE Call-Up to Miami, Sioux Falls found a way to defeat Iowa for the second straight night.
“I am so proud of our guys for banding together in such an important game,” said Skyforce head coach Nate Tibbetts. “To lose a player like Powell and beat a very talented team with only seven bodies is amazing.”
Sioux Falls jumped on Iowa early as they led by as many as 13 points with five minutes remaining in the opening quarter. It was much of the same in the second quarter as the Skyforce surged ahead 41-25 following a 3-pointer by Elton Nesbitt. Iowa responded with a 19-4 run to cut the deficit to one point with two minutes to go in the first half. Chicago Bulls assignee Shannon Brown scored 10 points in the quarter to help the Energy get back into the contest.
David Bailey scored 18 of his 26 points in the third quarter as the Skyforce led by as many as 19 points and appeared on their way to a blowout victory. However, following an injury to Nesbitt and the ejection of J.C. Mathis, Sioux Falls found themselves down to five players as they led 91-79 with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest. Iowa would cut the lead to 10 points on two occasions but was unable to get any closer as they dropped their sixth contest in seven games.
Courtney Sims contributed 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting for Iowa while Jovan Harris and Chicago Bulls assignee Cedric Simmons chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Sioux Falls will host the Central Division-leading Dakota Wizards on Friday at 7 p.m. Iowa returns home to face Fort Wayne on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
