Vipers Outgun Mad Ants for Big Road Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind., Dec. 28 -- Three Vipers players notched season-high point totals and the team's three-game losing skid came to a close as Rio Grande Valley got a 135-129 win over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants Friday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Seven Viper tallied double figures as they evened their road record to 3-3.

The Vipers trailed from the early going as the Mad Ants stormed out to a 12-2 run. The Vipers trailed by seven at the end of the first quarter and likewise at the end of the second.

After trailing by as many as 12 points, the Vipers tied the game for the fourth time at the 4:37 mark of the third quarter on a C.J. Watson 19-footer to tie the game at 84. On the next trip down the floor, the Vipers took their first lead on a 3-pointer from Kenny Taylor, making the score 87-84.

“This was a great team effort for us tonight, we had seven of our eight guys in double digits,” Vipers head coach Bob Hoffman said. “C.J. was C.J. tonight and we got huge nights from everyone.”

The Vipers outscored the Mad Ants 33-21 in the third quarter en route to the six-point victory.

Watson scored a season-high 36 points, including 16-18 from the free throw line. Trent Strickland added a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds, and Taylor chipped in 27 points of his own in the Viper win.

Sammy Mejia scored 41 points for the Mad Antz in the loss.

The Vipers travel to Des Moines for a Saturday night tilt with the Iowa Energy. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
