Idaho 111, Bakersfield 110
BOISE, Idaho, Mar. 1 -- In exciting fashion for the second game in a row, the Idaho Stampede defeated the Bakersfield Jam 111-110 on a layup by Ronell Taylor with 4.4 seconds left at Qwest Arena.
“I’m very proud of our guys”, said Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates. “We were able to hold off and beat a good team.”
Both teams shot over 50% from the field for the game. The lead changed hands 20 times throughout, nine of which coming in the fourth quarter. Idaho started the final period down by three, and battled to tie the game at 87 with 9:56 on the clock on an Eddie Robinson jump shot from the right wing.
Each team battled back and forth until Bakersfield looked to pull away. The Jam went up by seven when Ricky Sanchez fouled out with 4:38 remaining in the game, and Mateen Cleaves hit two free throws. Idaho fought back on six free throws and a big three pointer from Tim Barnes with 1:38 left on the clock.
Idaho shot 11 for 19 from the field in the final period, led by Robinson’s ten points in the quarter. Robinson led six Stampede players with double figure scoring with 24 points off the bench. Randy Livingston added 19 points and 6 assists, and newcomer Julius Hodge contributed 17 points off the bench on 7 for 10 shooting.
Bakersfield had three players score over 20 points, led by Cleaves and Kevinn Pinkney with game-highs of 27 points each. Pinkney added a game-high 15 rebounds, while Cleaves dished out a game-high 11 assists. Tamar Slay shot 9 for 13 from the field for his 26 points.
The Jam continue their road trip with a game on Saturday, March 3 at Sioux Falls, while the Stampede take on the Anaheim Arsenal at home on the same night. Saturday is Utah Jazz Affiliate Night for the Stampede at Qwest Arena. The Jazz dance team and mascot will perform at the game.
