Fort Worth 111, Austin 96
Austin, Nov. 25 (AP) -- Kelenna Azubuike scored 21 points and collected eight rebounds as the Fort Worth Flyers defeated the Austin Toros 111-96, spoiling the Toros home opener Saturday night at the Austin Convention Center. Toros forward Scott Merritt scored a game high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Toros, who fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Toros couldn’t overcome a balanced attack by the Flyers (1-0) who had seven players in double figures including Kevin Burleson (16), Corey Santee (15) and Jeremy Richardson (14). NBA assignee Ryan Hollins scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in his first D-League game.
Jamar Smith scored 19 points and Brock Gillespie had 13 points for the Toros, who were plagued by 22 turnovers.
“We played really well at times and then we couldn’t keep that energy going the whole game,” Toros head coach Dennis Johnson said. “We just couldn’t get over the hump – we kept scrapping but it just wasn’t enough.”
Trailing 46-43 at halftime, the Toros managed to tie to the game at 71-71 on a three point shot by B.J. Elder with 1:46 left in the third quarter.
“It wasn’t the game we thought it was going to be – we have a week off to look at what we did wrong on film and try to reorganize for our next game against Anaheim,” Johnson said.
In the fourth quarter, the Toros would cut the lead to 88-84 on a goaltending call against Flyers center Ryan Hollins, but the team couldn’t find an answer to the Flyers offensive attack. Flyers guard Jeremy Richardson scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Flyers close out the game on a 23-12 run.
Both the Flyers and the Toros don’t play again until Friday, December 1. The Fort Worth Flyers head back home for their first game of the season against the Bakersfield Jam at the Fort Worth Convention Center and the Toros will play the Anaheim Arsenal at the Austin Convention Center.
