Dazzle Nip Patriots for Preseason Win

ROANOKE, Va., Nov. 16 -- Anthony Grundy scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Roanoke Dazzle to a 116-115 OT win in an NBA Development League preseason game at the Roanoke Civic Center.

With the Dazzle trailing by double digits heading into the fourth quarter, Grundy led a furious rally, scoring 10 points in the quarter and eventually giving the Dazzle a lead with a minute left in regulation.

The game looked to be in hand with the Dazzle holding a three-point lead with eight seconds left in regulation, but after some missed free throws, a clutch 3-point shot by Patriots guard Carlos Hurt tied the game as time expired.

The Dazzle took control in the extra stanza, led by Grundy's four points and P.J. Ramos' defense. Ramos altered and blocked numerous shots in the final minute.

“There were some really good plays made and there were some really bad plays made," said Dazzle head coach Kent Davison. "Most of the bad plays were the turnovers and missed free throws that could have iced the game. That’s why you play the games. In practice you can look pretty good doing those things. The good part is we still won.”

The overtime period gave both teams the opportunity to get a better look at what they have heading into the regular season, which tips off Friday.

“It gave me a chance to see a couple more things from the guys," Patriots Head Coach Mike Brown said. "It’s important to see the young guys still on that bubble trying to make the team perform in different situations.”

Grundy was joined in Dazzle double-figure scoring by Seth Doliboa (16), Ramos (14), Jason Clark (13) and Andreas Glyniadakis (10).

The Patriots were led by Roderick Riley's 21 points. Erik Daniels chipped in with 15, former Dazzle player Mike King had 14, Hurt added 13 and Mark Karcher posted 10.

The Dazzle open the regular season on Friday with a home game against the Fort Worth Flyers. Fayetteville begins the season at home against the Flyers on Saturday.
