Riverdragons Roll Over Flight

COLUMBUS, Ga., Dec. 16 -- The Columbus Riverdragons (8-5) defeated the Huntsville Flight (5-8) by double digits for the second time in as many nights, cruising to an 86-67 victory at the Columbus Civic Center on Sunday.

Also for the second straight night, the Riverdragons had six players in double figures, led by shooting guard Ray Tutt, who scored a season-high 19 points hitting 8-of-11 shots from the floor. The Riverdragons also received double-figure performances from Gabe Muoneke (16), Tremaine Folwkes (12), Stais Boseman (12), George Reese (11) and Johnny Phillips (10).

Phillips hit 4-of-5 shots from the floor to post a season-high in points (10) and tying his season-high in rebounds (seven). Led by Tutt, Phillips and George Reese, the Riverdragons bench outscored the Flight's 44-32.

"We have to get out guys into the open court and take advantage of people," said Riverdragons coach Jeff Malone. "We did that tonight. We are finally coming together. When we play that way we are going to be a tough team."

The Flight, who shot 33.9 percent from the floor, were led by Lonnie Harrell with 14 points. The forward was the only Huntsville player to post double-figures in points.

"In the first half we didn't execute," said Flight coach Bob Thornton. "We came back in the second half and did a lot of what we wanted to do. We competed and we didn't give up. And that is the only positive we will take out of this thing."

The Riverdragon trailed 2-0 early in the first quarter, but following a hook by Gabe Muoneke to tie the score at 2-2, Columbus would never trail again. The Riverdragons would go on a 21-8 run to set up a nine point lead, 25-14, at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Flight went cold, hitting just 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) shots from the floor, managing to score a season-low eight points in the quarter. The Riverdragons, paced by 15 points from the bench, including six by Tutt, extended the lead to 19 points, 41-22, at halftime.

"It's only one game," said Tutt. "There's plenty of basketball left this season. I don't want to rush it. I wanted to come in here, do my time and pay my dues and see what happens. It's definitely a positive and I am very pleased with the outcome of today's game."

The Riverdragons did not let down in the second half, pushing their lead to a game-high 25 points when Boseman hit a driving layup at 5:42 of the third quarter. The Flight were unable to post a serious run, never moving closer than 17 points late in the fourth quarter before suffering their third straight loss.

The victory snapped the Riverdragons' two game losing streak at home and moves Columbus into a second in the NBDL standings, a half-game ahead of the Asheville Altitude (8-6) and the Mobile Revelers (8-6). The Riverdragons have now won two straight on the heels of its season-high three game losing streak of a week ago.
