Whitlocks's Eight Unanswered Points Seals Victory

North Charleston, SC. Dec. 3, 2001 – Tes Whitlock who scored 19 points and dished out five assists, had two key steals in the final minutes of the game to seal a 97-90 victory over the Roanoke Dazzle keeping the Lowgators (8-2) undefeated at home.

North Charleston still tops the league at (8-2) while Roanoke falls to (4-4). The Lowgators face the Huntsville Flight to avenge their second loss on Thursday, December 6 at the North Charleston Coliseum; tip-off is 7:00 p.m.

“We showed a lot of character tonight,” Coach English said. “We knew they (Roanoke) were going to make a run, but we stayed strong to pull-out the win.”

The Lowgators led as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter before a driving lay-up by Jeff Boese with less than two minutes in the game to give Roanoke a 85-83 lead. Tes Whitlock responded with eight unanswered points in the last minute, scoring five points off of two steals to regain the lead.

Galen Young, Chris Robinson and Fred House each contributed 15 points for North Charleston while former South Carolina Gamecock standout B.J. McKie dished out a season-high of 10 assists. The Lowgators shot 52.1 % in the game and scored 40 points off of 29 Dazzle turnovers.

“I thought our guys did what we had to do, to take the lead, but didn’t take care of the ball,” Coach Kent Davidson said. “When you’re on the road you can’t have 29 turnovers and expect to win. The biggest disappointment was not taking care of the ball.”

Marshall Phillips had 29 points to lead Roanoke while Thomas Hamilton had 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, followed by Artie Griffin and Danny Earl with 10 points apiece to round out double figure scorers.
