Ron Howard Named to NBA D-League Select Team
“We’re thrilled to bring the NBA D-League Select team back to the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas for the fourth year,” said Chris Alpert, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League. “This year’s team represents a talented cross section of the top prospects in the NBA D-League, and I’m looking forward to watching them compete against the NBA’s best young talent on the NBA’s biggest summer stage.”
The 2013 Select team includes players from 10 NBA D-League clubs and features four players with NBA experience: Mickell Gladness (Santa Cruz Warriors), Darnell Jackson (Reno Bighorns), Chris Johnson (Rio Grande Valley Vipers) and Kyle Weaver (Canton Charge).
Johnson, a member of the 2013NBA D-League Champion Vipers and the recipient of a GATORADE Call-Up to the Memphis Grizzlies last season, is one of eight members of the Select team to have participated in the 2013 NBA D-League Playoffs, including Brian Butch (Bakersfield Jam), Gladness, Stefhon Hannah (Santa Cruz Warriors), Ron Howard (Fort Wayne Mad Ants), Jamarr Sanders (Austin Toros), Dominique Sutton (Tulsa 66ers), and Weaver.
Hannah, who earned his second consecutive NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year award last season, and Gladness are one of two sets of regular-season teammates reuniting on the Select team roster. They are joined by Los Angeles D-Fenders duo Zach Andrews and Elijah Millsap. Millsap, brother of the NBA’s Paul Millsap, played in 44 games for the D-Fenders last season, averaging 17.4 points, good for second best on the team. Andrews chipped in averaging 7.0 points and 5.8 rebounds in 32 games.
Alex Jensen, the 2013 NBA D-League Coach of the year, who led Canton to its second consecutive NBA D-League postseason appearance in as many seasons, will helm the Select team in Las Vegas. Joining him on the bench for the summer is Casey Hill, a Santa Cruz assistant coach, and Joel Abelson, who was the head coach of the Sioux Falls Skyforce last season. Bakersfield’s Shaun Mirza will serve as the team’s athletic trainer.
The NBA D-League Select team returns to Las Vegas on the heels of the NBA D-League’s 12th season, in which an all-time high 58 NBA players were assigned to their NBA D-League affiliates and an additional 31 NBA D-League players earned 36 GATORADE Call-Ups to the NBA. An all-time high 30 percent of players on 2012-13 NBA end-of-season rosters have spent time in the NBA D-League during their careers.
NBA TV will offer live coverage of 38 NBA Summer League games, while fans can watch all of the action live from Las Vegas via NBA Summer League Live on NBA.com and NBA Mobile. NBA Summer League Live is a subscription service offering fans a full slate of live and archived games for $14.99, available on NBA.com, the App Store and Google Play. All of the NBA D-League Select team’s games will be shown live on NBA Summer League Live.
The 2013 NBA Summer League is comprised of 21 NBA teams and the NBA D-League Select squad, and features rookies, second-year players and select free agents.
