Fan favorite Kyle Goldcamp has been at the forefront of Erie basketball for a number of years. The Pittsburgh native was a standout at Gannon University, leading the team to a Division II Elite 8 appearance in 2009. That season, the Elite 8 was held at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of basketball. Even though the Golden Knights failed to win the title, Goldcamp remained confident.

Although his college career was over, the game of basketball wasn’t done with Kyle. Following graduation, Goldcamp tried out for the BayHawks and was granted a spot on the 2009-2010 roster. During that season, the 6’10” forward/center saw action in 32 games, including 10 starts. In limited minutes, Kyle averaged 3.3 points per game as well as 3.0 rebounds per game.

Goldcamp’s success wasn’t only measured by his statistics but rather by the intangibles he provided. On a nightly basis, he was playing against athletes who may have attended bigger college programs and Kyle held his own. He was able to provide enough hustle and energy to make an impact on the game outside of the score sheet.

Kyle grew even more as a second year professional during the 2010-2011 season. He averaged 6.4 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game in an increased role under Coach Jay Larranaga. For the season, Goldcamp participated in 42 games (18 starts).

Opportunities for Kyle will arise as he continues to grow as a basketball player. Having become the literal face of the franchise in the Erie (he was featured on an Erie Federal Credit Union billboard during the 2010-2011 season), Kyle has gained the support of the community. No matter where basketball may take him, Goldcamp can always look back to Erie as the launching point of his career.

Kyle was able to take a few minutes out of his busy summer schedule to answer some questions for us.

YOU PLAYED BASKETBALL AT PITTSBURGH CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL WHICH HAS A RICH TRADITION IN SPORTS. DID YOU TRY TO BECOME THE NEXT DAN MARINO ON THE GRIDIRON, "SUDDEN" SAM MCDOWELL ON THE BASEBALL DIAMOND OR DID YOU STICK TO HOOPS?
When I was growing up I did want to be the next great QB at Central like Dan Marino. I did play and start as QB my freshman year, but after the season I decided to not play anymore and I just stuck to basketball. It worked out because I just kept growing so my height was more useful in basketball.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT ON THE COURT?
I'd say it would have to be going to the Elite 8 my senior year at Gannon.

HAVING PLAYED FOR MULTIPLE YEARS IN ERIE, WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT PLAYING HERE?
The fans, they’re really supportive and great to be around. They are very loyal to their sports teams here.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO IN THE OFF-SEASON? WE HEAR WEDDING BELLS ARE IN YOUR FUTURE, ANY PRE-WEDDING JITTERS?
I’ve been working out a lot to get ready for the next season and tutoring a student this summer. I also have been saying YES a lot to my fiancé for whatever she wants for the wedding next summer. So far I haven’t had any pre-wedding jitters I’m just lucky she said yes.

BE HONEST, HOW MUCH OF THE WEDDING PLANNING HAVE YOU ACTUALLY DONE?
My biggest role in the planning is listening to my fiancé and saying whether I like something or not. I did book our DJ and I’ve tried to be around for the whole planning process.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN TALL OR IS THERE A CERTAIN POINT YOU REMEMBER HITTING A GROWTH SPURT?
I’ve always been taller than most of my classmates but I did grow 2 more inches my freshman year of college.

ANY DISADVANTAGES OF BEING SO TALL?
I hit my head a lot, especially in new places. I also don't blend into crowds very easily.

DO YOU ALWAYS SIT IN THE BACK AT MOVIE THEATERS?
Not all the time, I just sit wherever there aren't people behind me.

WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR BASKETBALL CAREER?
I’m not sure yet either Europe or another year in the D-League.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO FOR A CAREER AFTER BASKETBALL?
I’d love to coach and teach biology at the high school level.
