In the six seasons of the NBA D-League, five different teams have taken home the D-League Championship at the end of the season. Here is a look at each team, with their finishing records and top performers, many of whom went on to careers in the NBA. Keep in mind that some of these teams won the championship through a single-elimination tournament, while others were victorious in a best-of-three series to win the title. The Dakota Wizards will look to become the second team to repeat as champions heading into the 2007-08 season.

The Wizards won the 2006-07 Championship in dramatic fashion, knocking off the Colorado 14ers in overtime 129-121. Darius Rice, on his way to scoring a D-League record 52 points, knocked down a three-pointer with time running down in regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Wizards finished the regular season tied with a league-best 33-17 record, employing a lineup that included D-League Defensive Player of the Year Renaldo Major. Major received a GATORADE Call-Up during the season, spending a ten-day contract with the Golden State Warriors. Justin Williams also spent the beginning of the season with Dakota before receiving a GATORADE Call-Up and finishing the season with the Sacramento Kings.
2005-06: Albuquerque Thunderbirds
The Albuquerque Thunderbirds finished the 2005-06 season with a 26-22 record, second only to the Fort Worth Flyers for the best in the league. However the T-Birds got the best of Fort Worth in the Championship Game, coming out on top by a 119-108 margin. Point guard Tierre Brown, who has played in 134 NBA games, averaged 22.0 points during the two playoff games to lead Albuquerque, who suited up a whopping 23 different players during the regular season. The one T-Bird to receive a GATORADE Call-Up was Chuck Hayes, who signed with the Rockets during the middle of January and emerged as a valuable piece of Houston's rotation.
2004-05: Asheville Altitude
Asheville became the first (and only) team to repeat as D-League Champions when they blew out Columbus 90-67 to win the 2004-05 title. In a league that only consisted of six teams, Asheveille earned the third seed out of four playoff berths with a 27-21 record and won both of their playoff games on the road. Ron Slay led the Altitude with 17.1 points per game on his way to earning All-D-League Second Team honors. The Altitude sent two players to the NBA as GATORADE Call-Ups over the course of the season, as Kirk Penney signed with the Los Angeles Clippers and Brandin Knight joined the Houston Rockets.
2003-04: Asheville Altitude
The 2003-04 Altitude compiled the league's best record at 28-18 on their way to their first D-League title. Asheville had to go to overtime to knock off Hunstville 108-106 in the championship game. Desmond Penigar was the big gun for the Altitude, leading the league in scoring with 19.6 points while also being named the 2004 D-League Rookie of the Year. Mamadou N'Diaye, Penigar, and Rusty LaRue all earned GATORADE Call-Ups to the Hawks, Magic, and Warriors respectively.
2002-03: Mobile Revelers
Mobile, defeated Fayatteville 2-1 in a three-game series to win the second D-League Championship to be awarded. The Revelers were the last team to get into the playoffs with a 26-24 record, but managed to get by Fayeteville and their league-best 32-18 record. Ernest Brown and Derek Hood were both named Second Team All-D-League, but it was future NBA player Bobby Simmons who led the team with 17.1 points per game. Simmons and Rafer Alston, who suited up with the Revelers for six games, both earned GATORADE Call-Ups and have gone on to distinguished NBA careers. The head coach of the Revelers was Sam Vincent, who was recently hired as head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats.
2001-02: Greenville Groove
The Greenville Groove finished the regular season in a tie for the league's best record at 36-20, and swept North Charleston in a best-of-three series to win the first D-League Championship. Billy Thomas led the Groove with 14.0 points on his way to First Team All-D-League honors, although his teammate Ansu Sesay was the only player to receive a GATORADE Call-Up when he signed with the Seattle Supersonics.
