D-League in the Community

One of the main measures of success in the D-League is our standing year after year in the communities in which we play. As a league, we strongly believe the best way to build ties in the community is to be an active member in it. Through our various year-round programs, our goal is to provided unparalleled time and access to our players, coaches, and staff on a year round basis and to improve the quality of life in our communities.

All D-League teams participate in the league's community relations programs:
  • D-League Cares
  • Read to Achieve
  • Community Builders

Teams have their own community outreach efforts as well, including:

  • School Day Program
  • Student Achiever Program

    D-LEAGUE CARES
D-League Cares demonstrates the commitment of the NBA Development League, its teams and players in addressing important social issues with an emphasis that support education, youth and family development, and health-related causes. Through NBA Cares, the league, players and teams will raise and contribute $100 million for charity, donate more than 1 million hours of hands-on volunteer service to communities worldwide, and build more than 100 places where kids and families can live, learn and play over the next five years. READ TO ACHIEVE
The D-League teams will work to promote the love of reading by executing reading related programs and activities such as Welcome Back to School events, Read to Achieve Day, and monthly Reading Timeouts at schools, libraries and community organizations as well as in D-League arenas.

Continuing its commitment to the local community, the NBA Development League is celebrated “Read to Achieve Week” in all eight markets as training camps got underway.

Ime Udoka of the Fort Worth Flyers reads to local students.
    COMMUNITY BUILDERS PROGRAM
    (Employee Volunteer Program)

D-League Teams actively pursue volunteer opportunities at community events. They work with schools, community organizations and non-profits. Players, coaches and staff also serve as volunteer reading coaches and participate in more comprehensive projects around Thanksgiving and the December Holidays.

    SCHOOL DAY PROGRAM
The goal of the School Day Program is to introduce the D-League experience to students, teachers and parents in a fun and educational way.

    STUDENT ACHIEVER PROGRAM
The Student Achiever program runs throughout the school year, rewarding students for various reasons such as perfect attendance, straight A's or the "Hustle Award," which rewards kids that improve greatly in certain academic areas. The program is highlighted at games, usually around the end of the grading periods.

Here are some additional highlights from around the league:
