Sam Worthen
Sam Worthen, assistant coach of the Fayetteville Patriots, has 16 years of coaching experience in the International Basketball League (IBL), United States Basketball League (USBL), Puerto Rico Superior Professional Basketball League, Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and the National Basketball Development League (NBDL).
Worthen, standing at 6-foot-6, was one of the firsts in a new trend of tall point guards. He played for the Marquette Warriors between 1979-80 after leaving McLennan Community College. He led the Warriors in assists as a junior and he led them in scoring and assists as an All-American senior. After starring at Marquette University, Worthen was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the second round (26th overall pick) of the 1980 NBA Draft. He played two seasons in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls (1980-81) and the Utah Jazz (1981-82). Following his NBA career, Worthen played five years of minor league basketball. Throughout his coaching career, he has led his teams to three championships and has also earned coach of the year honors. He started his coaching career in 1985 as the player/coach of the USBL’s Springfield Fame. His debut was a success as the Fame won the league title. Three years later, he helped propel the New Haven Skyhawks to the 1988 USBL Championship. Worthen also won a championship in Puerto Rico. Worthen’s coaching experience includes head coach positions with the Albany Patroons (CBA), Miami Tropics (USBL; 1987 Champions), New York Whitecaps (USBL), Harrisburg Hammerheads (CBA), Fort Wayne Fury (CBA), Long Island Surf (USBL), Brooklyn Kings (USBL), and most recently with the Baltimore Bayrunners (IBL). He also coached six seasons (1993-1998) in the Puerto Rico Superior Professional Basketball League. Twenty-three years after leaving Marquette University for the Chicago Bulls, Worthen completed his undergraduate degree from Marquette’s College of Communication in August of 2003. Worthen lives with his wife, Florine.
