Forward C.J. Black Released

Lowgators Sign Forward Jamal Kendrick

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., March 1, 2001 -- The North Charleston Lowgators head coach Alex English announced today the signing of forward Jamal Kendrick. The Lowgators have also released forward C.J. Black due to injury.

"Unfortunately we've lost C.J. for the remainder of this season, but it is most important for him to get healthy so he can return to playing basketball," said English. "We hope to have him back in the Lowcountry next season."

"The addition of Jamal will strengthen our inside game," English continued. "He is an aggressive player who attacks the basket and can come in and get a double-double on any given night."

Kendrick, a 6-foot-8, 235 pound forward from Midwestern State University ('97), most recently played with the Seattle Sonics' summer league squad before being invited to the club's training camp this past fall.

Last season (2000-01), Kendrick played for the Grand Rapids Hoops in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) after playing with the Dallas Mavericks during the team's training camp. He averaged 6.6 ppg on .450 shooting (67-149 FGA) with 5.3 rpg over 17.9 mpg in 25 games with the Hoops.

During the 1999-2000 season, Kendrick averaged 15.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.0 apg and 2.0 bpg for the San Diego Stingrays of the International Basketball League (IBL) before signing with Piiloset Basket Turku in Finland where he averaged 13.2 ppg and 10.0 rpg.

Kendrick made his professional basketball debut with Neuchatel in Switzerland during the 1998-99 season where he averaged 22.5 ppg on .585 shooting along with 9.5 rpg and 2.0 bpg.

Kendrick played for four colleges over four seasons (1993-1997) including Barton Community College (12.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg), Gulf Coast Community College (23.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg), New Mexico State (7.0 rpg, 6.0 rpg) and Midwestern State in Texas (17.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg).

Black, a team leader both on and off-the-court for the Lowgators, has missed the club's last six games due to injury. He averaged 6.4 ppg and 3.9 rpg over 15.5 mpg in 30 games (17 starts) with North Charleston.

The Lowgators roster now stands at 11. Kendrick will wear no. 29 and is expected to be in uniform for tonight's game vs. the Asheville Altitude at the Asheville Civic Center broadcast live on WXTC 1390 AM.
