Charge Outlasted by Mad Ants
The Canton Charge fell to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, 86-75, at the Allen Country War Memorial Coliseum in Indiana on Wednesday night. The loss drops Canton to 0-3 in the young season, while Fort Wayne earns their first victory of the year and improves to 1-3.
Canton pressed throughout the entire first half, holding Fort Wayne to just 35% shooting from the floor, nabbing 25 first half rebounds and forcing seven steals en route to a 46-39 lead. The Mad Ants came out of the intermission strong, scoring 26 points on 12-of-21 shooting in the third led by Walker Russell’s 18 points, to take a 65-60 lead heading into the final period.
Fort Wayne was able to stave of Canton the rest of the way, outscoring them 21-15 in the fourth quarter. After just five first half turnovers by the Charge, the Mad Ants ended the night with 17 forced. Canton came into the night averaging 103 points per game.
Kevin Jones led Canton in scoring and notched his third double-double in as many games with 24 points and 11 rebounds with one blocked shot in 39 minutes. Coming into tonight, Kevin was second in the league in scoring and rebounds, averaging 28.5 and 15.0 respectively. Jorge Gutierrez gave a fantastic all-around effort with a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, five steals and a block in 33 minutes. Alex Ruoff added 10 points and five rebounds in 30 minutes of relief off the bench.
Russell paced Fort Wayne’s efforts as he finished with 25 points on 11-of-22 shooting, six rebounds and five assists in 45 minutes. Jajuan Johnson, the second overall pick in this year’s NBA Development League Draft, provided a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds with seven blocks in 46 minutes. Ron Howard notched 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line in 30 minutes.
The Charge return back home to the Civic Center for the first leg of a back-to-back with the Erie BayHawks on Friday, November 30th at 7:30 p.m.
