Canton Nabs Season-High Fifth-Straight Win

The Canton Charge extended their season-long winning streak to five with a 110-100 victory over the Idaho Stampede in their first leg of the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase in Reno, Nevada on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves Canton at 11-8 on the season, while Idaho drops to 4-14.

The Stampede found themselves ahead after the first period behind solid shooting and constant cleaning of the glass. Idaho hit 11-of-24 shots for 46% from the field, all while grabbing 15 first quarter boards to the Charge’s six. Canton fought back in the game in the second by attacking Idaho on the defensive end, with six steals and forcing nine turnovers in the period to tie the game at 51-51 at halftime.

The game’s theme of close and competitive basketball maintained throughout the third quarter with seven lead changes and nine ties as both teams continued to fight for the advantage. Justin Holiday’s 20-foot jumper with 2.7 seconds left in the third gave Idaho a 77-75 lead heading into the final period. A quick 5-0 run by the Charge to start the fourth quarter would be all they needed to pull ahead and maintain for the rest of the game, as Canton consistently attacked the Idaho defense throughout the quarter and earned 22 trips to the free-throw line, hitting 16 en route to outscoring the Stampede 35-23 in the fourth.

Dominique Johnson led all scorers with a season-high 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line with three rebounds, two assists and a season-best three steals in a season-high 33 minutes. Kyle Gibson had his second-straight 20+ point game with 24 on 8-of-14 shooting with three rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes. Jorge Gutierrez added 15 points with three assists and three steals in 26 minutes. The Charge finished with just 11 turnovers for 13 points, while the Stampede had 20 miscues for 24 points. Canton as a team hit a season-high 38 free-throws on a season-high 46 attempts for 83%.

Five Idaho players scored in double figures, led by Justin Harper’s 18 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes of the bench. Nolan Smith added 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 35 minutes. Solomon Alabi had the contest’s lone double-double with 13 points and 13 boards in 21 minutes. The Stampede outrebounded the Charge 49-28 on the afternoon, a new season-low for Canton.

The Charge will round out their participation in the ninth annual NBA Development League Showcase against the Santa Cruz Warriors in the sole matchup of the season between the two teams on Thursday, January 10th at 3:45 p.m. at the Reno Events Center.
