Canton Falls in Fort Wayne
The Canton Charge fell to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, 115-102, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday night. The loss puts Canton at 22-15 on the season, while Fort Wayne pulls even at 19-19. The Charge finish with the 4-3 edge in the season series between the two East division foes.
After five lead changes throughout the early stages of the gameís opening quarter, the Mad Ants pulled out to a 34-29 lead behind an efficient offensive attack of 58% shooting from the floor led by Anthony Richardsonís 10 points. Fort Wayne opened the game up in the second quarter by outscoring Canton 36-12 and holding them to 19% from the floor while hitting 50% of their own attempts from the field. The Charge also surrendered seven turnovers in the second period and 12 overall in the first half as they trailed the home team 70-41.
Canton continued to fight to stay in the game and opened the third period on a 7-0 run, ultimately chipping away at the deficit to cut it to 92-75 at the end of the third. The Charge would never pull within double-digits the rest of the way, but would come all the way back to outscore the Mad Ants 61-45 in the second half. Canton hit 37-of-44 free-throw attempts in the game for 84%, while Fort Wayne converted 30-of-41 attempts from the charity stripe for 73%.
Kyle Weaver poured in a season-high 21 points, including 12-of-12 from the free-throw line himself, in 23 minutes off the Charge bench. DíAundray Brown scored 10 of his season-best 15 points off the bench in the third quarter, adding five rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes off the bench. Travis Franklin had 16 points and five rebounds in 36 minutes, while Kyle Gibson added 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in 28 minutes. Cantonís bench outscored Fort Wayneís 58-31 in the game.
Fort Wayne was paced by Tony Mitchellís 27 points on 9-of-25 shooting with four rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes. Ron Howard netted 26 points with nine assists in 39 minutes. Brandon Wallace notched a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds with one block in 27 minutes. Luke Harangody came off the bench to provide 16 points with five rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes for the Mad Ants.
Canton will continue to make their rounds against East Division opponents when they head to Maine for a two-game set with the Red Claws beginning Friday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.
