Canton Charge Alumni Update - July 7, 2014

As basketball season never stops, talent from all over the world has gathered in the Sunshine State for the first slate of summertime hoops. The Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League is taking place at the Amway Center from July 5-11. The 25-game, seven-day event features 10 teams (Orlando, Boston, Brooklyn, Detroit, Houston, Indiana, Memphis, Miami, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia) with rosters consisting of their own players under contract, 2014 rookies and invitees with various levels of professional experience from all over the world.

Each team in Orlando will play five games over the seven-day event, with a championship day being played on the final day of the league. A point system will establish the standings leading up to the final day, with points awarded each game based on victories and in-game scenarios.

The Charge have three alumni representing the wine & gold in Orlando: G Jorge Gutierrez (Brooklyn) , F Kevin Jones (Indiana) and F Arinze Onuaku (Indiana) . All three will look to make an impression for their respective clubs in front of a gym packed with NBA front office executives and coaches in search of budding talent and diamonds in the rough.

Under contract with the Nets after being called up this past season, Gutierrez has some familiarity with some of his Brooklyn teammates on the squad and the system in place. In the Netsí first game on Saturday, Jorge netted eight points on 3-of-6 shooting with two boards, three assists and a steal in 16 minutes. He was a clear difference maker on the floor, with his teamís plus/minus differential at +17 points during his time on the court in Brooklynís win.

Indiana found themselves on the losing end of Brooklynís Saturday opener, but it wasnít from lack of effort, especially from former Charge and Cavaliers stretch power forward Kevin Jones. Back from choosing to exit the D-League to play in the Philippines, KJ played 22 minutes for the Pacers and scored six points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and swatted two blocked shots.

Jones and Onuaku are NBA free agents with experience in The Association. KJ started out with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Charge before he went to explore other options overseas. Arinze saw his game take a huge step from his first to second seasons in Canton, culminating with a stint with the New Orleans Pelicans and a call-up by the Cavs this past spring. With their names and talent reputations already in league circles, strong performances this week could propel them back on to an NBA roster once training camps open in the fall
