Jam Announce Rod Baker as New Assistant Coach

BAKERSFIELD, October 19, 2012 – Bakersfield Jam Head Coach Will Voigt has completed his coaching staff for the upcoming 2012-13 season, the club announced today. Rod Baker will join the Jam as an Assistant Coach, joining Voigt for his fourth season as Head Coach of the Bakersfield Jam.

“I have known Rod for many years and we are lucky to have his experience and wisdom on our staff this season,” said Voigt. “He does a great job of connecting with players and he will be a big asset for our team.”

Baker will bring remarkable basketball experience to the Jam coaching staff, having spent the last seven years (2005-2012) as Head Coach in the Premier Basketball League (PBL) for the Rochester RazorSharks. During his tenure in Rochester, Baker led the RazorSharks with an impressive 147-36 overall record including four championships. Originally coaching the RazorSharks in the ABA and winning the championship, Baker transitioned his program to the PBL where he led his team to three additional championships as well as being named Coach of the Year three times.

A College of the Holy Cross graduate, Baker has also had coaching experience with the Harlem Globetrotters, Grand Rapids Hoops (CBA), Rutgers University, University of Cincinnati, University of California-Irvine, and Seton Hall University.

In addition to Baker, Shaun Mirza and George Galanopoulos will return to the Jam for the 2012-13 campaign.

Shaun Mirza will return as Head Athletic Trainer and continue his outstanding performance with day-to-day health needs of the team, prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Mirza stepped in last season after Tim DiFrancesco, former Jam Head Athletic Trainer, got a call-up to the Los Angeles Lakers. “Shaun did a tremendous job last season stepping in after Tim’s call-up to the Lakers,” said Head Coach Will Voigt. “With a season under his belt and time to prepare this go around, I think he will be one of the best trainers in the league.”

Galanopoulos was a basketball operations intern last season for the Jam, in which he showed exceptional work ethics and dedication to the team. He returns for the 2012-13 season as a Player Development Coach. “George has made a lot of strides since coming to us as an intern last year,” said Voigt. “He has a real passion for working with players and I look forward to watching his continued growth as a coach.”

Both John Bryant, Assistant Coach/Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Brian Levy, Assistant General Manager, are returning for their second and third seasons respectively.
