Byars Returns to Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, February 2, 2012 – The Bakersfield Jam announced today that they have acquired shooting guard/small forward Derrick Byars.

A first round selection (5th overall) by the Bakersfield Jam in the 2008 NBA Development League Draft, Byars played 49 games in the 2008-2009 season averaging 17.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. He returned two seasons later to the Jam in January 2011, where he played in 33 games and averaged 17.5 points and 5.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.

Most recently, Byars participated in the Miami Heat’s 2011-12 training camp. Byars was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft, and was then traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He has played overseas in Greece, Germany, and France. Byars has participated in the NBA Summer League with the Philadelphia 76ers (2007), New Orleans Hornets (2008), Oklahoma City Thunder (2008-2009), Indiana Pacers (2009) and the Chicago Bulls (2010).

As a senior at Vanderbilt, Byars averaged 17.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 steals. He was named All-SEC Player of the Year in 2007.

David Palmer has been re-acquired and Chu Maduabum has been waived due to injury. The roster now stands at 10.
