Mexico City -
The Soles Mexicali of the Mexican Professional Basketball League (LNBP) are gearing up to face the NBA Development League’s Bakersfield Jam on Monday, November 21 at 7 pm at the Jam Events Center in Bakersfield, California.
This is the second time that teams from both leagues have faced one another on the court. In November 2010, the Halcones UV from Xalapa traveled to Rio Grande to go head-to-head against the Valley Vipers, who defeated the Mexican team, 118-116.
A new year calls for new teams from each league to get ready for another exciting and action-packed international preseason competition.
The Soles Mexicali’s roster is highlighted by Pedro Meza, who is known as the Mexican ball mover and was a member of Mexico’s silver medal winning team at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara.
Another key player who is on pace for his best season in the LNBP is Greg Smith, a Fresno State University alum. Smith, who decided to play in the Mexican league to stay close to the US, averages 11.7 points and 8 rebounds.
Soles Mexicali feature an international flavor in the LNBP with many other key players and coaches coming from various Latin American and European countries, such as Venezuelans David Cubillan and José "Grillito" Vargas, as well as Spanish head coach Ivan Deniz.
Bakersfield Jam also has an extremely talented roster. In the last NBA D-League Draft, the team selected basketball standout Mac Koshwal from DePaul University. The power forward is known for being a player who gets rebounds and can be intimidating on the court.
The Jam also selected guard Mustapha Farrakhan from the University of Virginia and forward Renaldo Major who came along with Osiris Eldridge in a trade with the Dakota Wizards.
Soles Mexicali were LNBP Champions in 2006 and runner up in the FIBA Americas League of 2008. The Mexican team has had renowned basketball stars such as Horacio Llamas (first Mexican in the NBA) and DeJuan Wheat, former NBA player.
Bakersfield Jam entered the NBA D-League in the 2006-07 season. The Jam has affiliation with the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, and Toronto Raptors of the NBA.
