Glen McGowan led the Ambassadors with 16 points, while teammates Larry Turner and Carl Elliott chipped in with 13 and 12, respectively. Mo Charlo and Nick Lewis contributed on the boards, each tallying six rebounds in the win as Errick Craven and Cecil Brown dished out four assists apiece.
Iran came out hot, jumping out to a 12-4 advantage four minutes into the first quarter before McGowan energized the Ambassadors off the bench, scoring seven points in the quarter, to give the NBA D-League stars a 23-21 advantage at the end of the first. The Ambassadors’ momentum continued into the second quarter, with the squad owning a six point advantage, 37-31, heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, the NBA D-League squad continued to dominate on the backs of McGowan and Doug Thomas, who each had six points in the period, stretching their lead to 10 as the third quarter wound down.
Withstanding a late run from Iran in the fourth quarter in which the Ambassadors’ lead was cut to four with just over three minutes to play, the NBA D-Leaguers bounced back, opening a 6-0 run, and relying on some clutch performances from the free throw line, to close the game up six; 77-71.
The Ambassadors also emerged victorious in the first meeting between the two teams; etching a 79-60 win into the books. In that contest, Lewis and Elliott shared game-high scoring honors with 11 points apiece, while McGowan netted 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Both teams opened their Rocky Mountain Revue presented by StoresOnline schedules on Saturday with defeats; the Ambassadors fell to the San Antonio Spurs 68-65, while the Iranian National Team was defeated by the Dallas Mavericks, 79-62.
The Ambassadors next game is Monday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m. ET, when they take on an Atlanta Hawks team which features a trio of former NBA D-Leaguers; Jeremy Richardson, Luke Jackson and Kevinn Pinkney.
