Five Former Toros Head to NBA Training Camps
AUSTIN, TX, Oct. 2, 2008 -- Five players from the Austin Toros 2007-08 Southwest Division Championship season have been invited to participate in NBA training camps this week. Cheyne Gadson is included on the Dallas Mavericks camp roster, DerMarr Johnson on the Washington Wizards, Ian Mahinmi on the San Antonio Spurs, Darius Washington on the Chicago Bulls, and Marcus Williams on the Charlotte Bobcats. Held prior to each NBA season, training camps serve as a time for coaching staff to evaluate players, scout the team's strengths and weaknesses, prepare the players for the regular season, and determine the team's opening day roster.
Gadson, a 6-3, 190 pound guard out of Oklahoma State, averaged 10.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists for the Toros last season. He was traded to the Albuquerque Thunderbirds in March, where he finished the season.
Johnson was the sixth overall selection by the Hawks in the 2000 NBA Draft out of Cincinatti. The 6-9, 215 pound swingman owned averages of 17.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game in his time with the Toros. Johnson finished last season with the Spurs after receiving two Gatorade Call-ups to the team.
Mahinmi, the Spurs first pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, was on assignment from the team during the 2007-08 season. The center standing at 6-11, 230 pounds, averaged 17.1 points and 8.2 boards per game in 45 starts with the Toros.
Washington, a 6-2, 185 pound guard, was also on assignment from the Spurs last season, and averaged 25 points per game, 8 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 37.7 minutes while in Austin. The Memphis product played six games for the Toros before being waived by their NBA affiliate and finishing the season in Italy.
Williams, a 6-7, 205 pound forward out of Arizona, was drafted by San Antonio in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft. While with the Toros, Williams held 19.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game averages. After receiving two Gatorade Call-ups, one to the Spurs and one to the Clippers, Williams finished the 2007-08 season in Los Angeles.
