NEW YORK, April 5, 2010 – The Phoenix Suns today signed center/forward Dwayne Jones of the Austin Toros, making him the record 34th GATORADE Call-Up of the 2009-10 NBA Development League season. Jones joins 79 current NBA players with NBA D-League experience.
Jones has appeared in 48 games, all starts, for Austin this season, averaging 17.6 points and an NBA D-League-leading 16.0 rebounds in 40.0 minutes. He has scored in double figures 46 times, registering 44 double-doubles. He scored a season-high 29 points in an 88-87 loss to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Dec. 12, 2009 and pulled down an NBA D-League season-high 27 rebounds in a 118-113 road win over the Bakersfield Jam on March 20.
A key contributor for Austin, Jones led the team in rebounds in 40 games, and was the leading scorer on nine occasions. For his play this season, Jones was twice named NBA D-League Co-Performer of the Week. A 2010 NBA D-League All-Star, Jones scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Western Conference All-Stars in Dallas in February.
Undrafted out of Saint Joseph’s in 2005, Jones returns to the NBA following stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Bobcats between 2005 and 2009. In 80 career NBA games, Jones averaged 1.3 points, 1.3 rebounds and 7.9 minutes.
A three-year contributor at Saint Joseph’s, Jones averaged 10.1 points and 11.6 rebounds during his senior season when he was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year.
Jones is expected to join the Suns today and be available on Wednesday, April 7 when the team hosts the San Antonio Spurs.
