Toros Host High School All-Star Games

    AUSTIN, TX (March 28) – The Austin Toros will host the 2008 Dennis Johnson Memorial Boys High School All-Star Classic presented by Regions Bank on April 12 at 4:30 p.m. and the inaugural Girls High School All-Classic presented by Austin Radiological Association on April 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center. Standout players from across the greater central Texas area will compete against each other in a North vs. South format.

    Over 40 players from local area high schools will participate in the event, including many who will continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level. Both games take place prior to Toros scheduled home games.

    The north boys will be coached by Mike Murphy (Pflugerville) and assisted by Marshall Sanders (Pflugerville-Connally) and Darrell Hagemann (McNeil). Curtis Knight is the director of the north team. Jan Jernberg (Lake Travis) serves as head coach for the south boys and Cliff Ellis (Lake Travis), Tres Ellis (Austin), Kevin Fishbeck (Lake Travis) and John Morgan (Crockett) will serve as assistant coaches. Celester Collier (Bowie) is the south team director.

    The inaugural south girls roster will be coached by Jennifer Pillich (Akins), Jane Johnson (Akins) and Trisha Johnson (Austin High). Shannon Stauffer (Westlake), Kyla Mills (RR-Stony Point) and Lamont King (St. Stephens) will serve as the coaches for the north girls.

    Shanna Crossley and Kendra Wecker of the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars will serve as honorary team captains for the north and south girl’s squads on April 11. Crossley and Wecker will sign autographs immediately after the inaugural Girls High School All-Star Classic and will compete in a 2 Ball competition during the 1st quarter of the Toros game that evening against the Albuquerque Thunderbirds.

    Fans can enter a raffle prior to the start of the Toros game on April 11 to participate in the 2 Ball competition with the Silver Stars. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Dennis Johnson Foundation created by the family of the late Toros head coach and NBA great. Other Silver Stars giveaways will take place over the course of the Toros game that night.

    The start of the Toros game on Friday against the Albuquerque Thunderbirds following the Girls All-Star Classic is 8:00 p.m. Saturday’s game against the Tulsa 66ers tips off at 7:00 p.m.
