The centerpiece of the NBA, WNBA, and the NBA D-league is the Read to Achieve program. Read to Achieve promotes the love of reading and online literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children. The Austin Toros Read to Achieve program will include at a minimum the following events:

• Back to School Rally
• Read to Achieve Day
• Monthly Read to Achieve Visits
• Reading Corner at the Austin Convention Center
• Holiday Reading Events

Back to School Rally

On September 17th, the Austin Toros participated in a Back to School community rally sponsored by David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. The surrounding Chestnut neighborhood and Campbell Elementary School directly benefit from the rally that included a school supply drive. The entire Austin community was invited to come and join in the fun.

Read to Achieve Day

The Austin Toros launched their inaugural Read to Achieve program with Read to Achieve Day at Norman Elementary in Austin, TX. Throughout the year, the Toros will work with approximately 20 schools in the Austin Independent School District and surrounding area. The program sends the coaches, players, mascot, and sponsor volunteers to the schools for monthly reading time-outs and themed parties including a “Slam Dunk the TAKS party” in the spring of 2006.
The Austin Toros Read to Achieve program is sponsored by A Glimmer of Hope Austin, Austin Partners in Education and BAE Systems.

By hosting read-aloud events and shared reading activities, the Austin Toros can promote the value of reading and online literacy. Reading Timeouts consist of adults (players, coaches, front-office staff) and students reading together and discussing what they read at various locations including school, community centers, libraries, shelters and hospitals. The Austin Toros are excited to include reading events en espanol.

Organizations requesting Read to Achieve appearances should submit an Appearance Request Form 30 days prior to the event to:

Prior to the start of home games, Read to Achieve activities will be available in the Kidz Zone at the Austin Convention Center. Activities will include read-alouds and arts/crafts projects.
